Psychedelic Blues

I am not going to lie, I had a very hard time switching from film to digital photography. In the beginning, what, like 18 years ago? I felt like film was dead and I had to switch to digital. The images were too sharp, too contrasty, digital photography relied too heavenly on the computer, and I had no idea how to use Photoshop or Lightroom, if Lightroom was even an option back then. Before the switch over I was shooting everything from weddings to family sessions with my trusty N90. I loved that camera so much! It was a big step up from the Nikon F2 and the Pentax K 1000 that I had previously been using. I took it to Hawaii and Costa Rica! I did family sessions in rivers, I photographed the kids I was a nanny for. I also used to shoot medium and large format portraits for people, I still have the negatives! But when the switch over from film to digital happened, I stopped photographing for a few years. I couldn’t make the jump over to digital, and It didn’t feel like people were still using film, so I took a break from photography.

I slowly came back, picking up a client here and there, learning the most basic uses of Photoshop and Lightroom. But once I realized I could do that just fine, I started to shoot film on the side “just for me”. At this point, I almost never put my “normal” lenses on my digital camera for any personal images. All of the work I do “just for me” is either created with a Lensbaby Lens and digital camera, or film. I use my Grandfather Julius’s vintage cameras, vintage Polaroids and a few other vintage cameras I have picked up over the years. The images below were created with a Pentax K 1000 and Psychedelic Blues Film. The film is magical, covered in colorful blobs and streaks. I do this kind of thing just for me, just to keep photography interesting to me. I know these are not perfect images, they are not meant to be. It is experimental film created by exposing the film to all sorts of light leaks and shiny paper and who knows what else.
